Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Face Everything And Rise (F.E.A.R.)

Welcome to the 5th edition of our weekly COVID-19 newsletters.

Firstly, we hope you had an amazing long Easter weekend. For once the weather seemed to favour Sydney - which is just typical considering now we are being told to stay home.

On a personal level, we made the most of the sun by putting up the tent in the garden, painting eggs and just generally having some much need family fun time. With the chaos of the past few weeks it really was well needed and now we’re back and ready to go again.

As expected, with the various stimulus packages receiving Royal Assent last Thursday, more guidance has now been released, particularly with regards to the eligibility criteria and process around JobKeeper.

However, with this guidance comes more confusion, particularly as we are now starting to process payrolls for clients that MIGHT be eligible for the JobKeeper subsidy. This is posing a whole raft of new questions that we are working through with our clients.

For this week’s newsletter we have researched high and low to (hopefully) bring you answers to all your questions with regards to the JobKeeper stimulus package. We have outlined below what we believe is a comprehensive guide to the programme, including further details on the eligibility requirements that have been made public this week.

However, we wanted to also quickly advise that the $10,000 NSW Government Grant is now open for applications – simply click here.

There are strict criteria that need to be met to be approved for this grant. We are actively contacting clients that we believe may be eligible - if we haven’t been in touch, and you would like to know more or believe your business may be able to apply, then please get in touch with us.

For those that process their own payroll, Xero has announced a support note on how to process a JobKeeper payment for eligible employees.

A reminder below that sometimes we have to say No.

We will be sure to bring you more updates next week.

Sometimes We Have To Say No
Our role as advisors is to support small businesses, but we cannot compromise our standards along the way, particularly as the effects of COVID-19 continue to rage on for our clients.

The Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) together with the ATO recently released a statement as a reminder of the ethical responsibilities of accountants and bookkeepers. The core of their message was that the ATO will not look favourably on businesses who seek to become eligible for grants, loans, benefits or other assistance that they would not ordinarily be entitled to.
